backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of
a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of
table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.

The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of
pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large
table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and
sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently
saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price,
at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are
few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I
could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.

One taste is never enough.

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a spiel about how much I love Claudia
Winkleman. In part, it’s because she’s so silly, and in part, it’s
because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents, from Strictly to The Traitors. 

But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed
with everything she wears. I’ve spent a fortune copying her exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer
that I definitely don’t go anywhere fancy enough to wear.

Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to
perfect her signature style. I’d describe it as soft goth:
lots of black, velvet and chunky knits, with a fair few sequins and prints
(particularly tartan) thrown in. I’m not alone in my
reverence: there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits.

But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo, two issues arise repeatedly: Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive or sold out (or
both).

So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday,
you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by some top-end designer.

RIYADH, Nov 29 (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia has abandoned its pursuit
of an ambitious defence treaty with Washington in return for normalising relations with Israel and is now pushing for a more modest military cooperation agreement, two
Saudi and four Western officials told Reuters.

In a drive to get a wide-ranging mutual security treaty over the line earlier this year, Riyadh softened its position on Palestinian statehood, telling Washington that a public commitment from Israel to a two-state solution could be
enough for the Gulf kingdom to normalise relations.

But with public anger in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East at fever
pitch over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has again made recognition of Israel conditional on it taking concrete steps
to create a Palestinian state, two Saudi and three Western sources said.

Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu is still eager to secure normalisation with the Saudi
powerhouse as a historic milestone and a sign of broader acceptance in the Arab world, Western diplomats said.

But he faces overwhelming opposition at home to any concessions to the
Palestinians following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks and knows any gesture in the direction of statehood would fracture his ruling coalition, they said.

With both leaders shackled for now by their
domestic powerbases, Riyadh and Washington hope a more modest defence pact could be sealed before President Joe Biden leaves the White House
in January, the sources said.

A full-blown U.S.-Saudi treaty would need to pass the
U.S. Senate with a two-thirds majority – and this would be a non-starter unless Riyadh recognises Israel, the six
sources said.

The pact now under discussion would involve expanding joint military exercises and drills to address regional
threats, mainly from Iran. It would foster partnerships between U.S.
and Saudi defence firms, with safeguards to prevent collaboration with
China, the sources said.

The agreement would promote Saudi investment in advanced technologies, especially drone defence.
The U.S. would increase its presence in Riyadh through training, logistics and cyber security support, and may
deploy a Patriot missile battalion to enhance missile defence and integrated deterrence.

But it would not be the kind of binding mutual defence treaty
that would oblige U.S. forces to protect the world’s biggest oil exporter in the event of foreign attack.

“Saudi Arabia will get a security deal which will allow more military cooperation and sales of U.S. weapons, but not a defence treaty similar to that of Japan or South Korea as initially sought,” said
Abdelaziz al-Sagher, head of the Gulf Research Institute
think-tank in Saudi Arabia.

THE TRUMP DILEMMA

The picture is complicated further, however, by the impending arrival of Donald Trump in the White House.

While Trump’s plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict excludes any provisions for Palestinian statehood or sovereignty, he is a close ally of the Saudi crown prince.

Palestinian and some Arab officials worry that Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner – architect of the
“Deal of the Century” and also a close ally of the crown prince – may ultimately
persuade him to support the plan.

How the prince reconciles Saudi priorities with this shifting diplomatic landscape will be pivotal,
defining both his leadership and the future of the peace process, diplomats said.

The current U.S. administration has not given up hope for a deal on security guarantees before Biden leaves office
in January, but a number of obstacles remain. One person in Washington familiar with the talks said there was reason to be sceptical about whether there was enough
time to strike a deal.

U.S. officials are mindful that the kingdom is still interested in formally cementing the guarantees it has been seeking, especially
to gain access to more advanced weapons, but are uncertain whether it would prefer
to get it done under Biden, or wait for Trump, the source
said.

“We continue to discuss and have many lines of effort on the table (with the Saudis),” the U.S.

official said.

The White House National Security Council
declined comment when asked about efforts toward reaching a deal on U.S.

security guarantees for Saudi Arabia.

A defence treaty giving Saudi Arabia U.S. military protection in exchange for recognising Israel would reshape the Middle East by uniting
two long-time foes and binding Riyadh to Washington at a time
when China is making inroads in the region.

It would allow the kingdom to shore up its security and ward off threats
from Iran and its Houthi allies, to avoid a repeat of the 2019
strikes on its oil facilities, which Riyadh and Washington both blamed on Tehran. Iran has denied any role.

A senior Saudi official said the treaty was 95% complete
but Riyadh opted to discuss an alternative agreement, given it was not doable without normalisation with Israel.

Netanyahu’s office did not comment when asked about the Saudi position on Palestinian statehood.

Depending on the format, a scaled-down cooperation agreement could be approved without going through Congress
before Biden leaves office, two of the sources said.

There were other stumbling blocks in the
negotiations to secure a mutual defence treaty.

For instance, there was no progress in the talks about
civil nuclear cooperation because Saudi Arabia refused to sign a
so-called 123 Agreement with the U.S. that would have denied Riyadh the right to
nuclear enrichment, the six sources said.

Saudi objections to articles related to human rights proved to be another area of
disagreement, one Saudi source close to the talks told Reuters.

‘THE BIG PRIZE’

While the Saudi leadership strongly advocates Palestinian statehood, it remains uncertain, according to diplomats, how the crown prince would respond if Trump revives the deal he floated in 2020 to resolve
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The plan marks a dramatic shift in U.S. policy and international
agreements by overtly aligning with Israel and deviating sharply from the long-standing
land-for-peace framework that has historically guided negotiations.

It would allow Israel to annex vast stretches of land in the occupied West
Bank, including Israeli settlements and the Jordan Valley, and recognises Jerusalem as the “undivided capital of Israel” – effectively denying Palestinian claims to East Jerusalem as their capital, a central aspiration in their statehood goals
and in accordance with U.N. resolutions.

By legitimising Israeli annexations, the Trump plan is viewed by many as a severe blow
to the two-state solution and Palestinian hopes of statehood.

Saudi officials insist that the creation of a Palestinian state in accordance with previous international agreements, including East Jerusalem as its capital,
remains an essential condition for long-term regional peace and stability.

Without it the cycle of violence will continue to jeopardise any normal relations, they say.

“How can we imagine a region integrated if we sidestep the Palestinian issue?” a
senior Saudi official said. “You can’t prevent the Palestinian right to self-determination.”

And in some of the harshest criticism of Israel since the start of the Gaza war, the Crown Prince Mohammed called Israel’s military actions in Gaza “collective genocide” in his address to an Arab and
Islamic summit in Riyadh this month.

The potential for Saudi normalisation with Israel,
however, could be revisited in the future,
perhaps once the dust settles after the Gaza war – and
possibly under a different Israeli government, diplomats said.

Fawaz Gerges, a Middle East expert at the London School
of Economics, said Trump would leverage all possible avenues to secure historic normalisation between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

“For Trump, Saudi Arabia is the big prize,” said Gerges.

“As to how normalisation could happen despite repeated Saudi leaders insistence they will not recognise Israel until a real path to a Palestinian state is set, Trump could promise a ceasefire in Gaza in return for normalisation and tentative promise to support a Palestinian state, without obliging Israel to make any real concessions to the Palestinians.”

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes,
sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu,
but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price,
at just under £150, is ridiculous’

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant
Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand,
went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning
the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty
– dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man.
The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright,
while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats
throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover
in the shadows.

We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that
tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of
the noisily, glossily confident.

We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance
of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are
a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra
caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price,
at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few
better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I
could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.

One taste is never enough.

after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.

One was a stoner guy who would sit there blazed out of his gourd,’ Tony read from Jackie’s book.

I’d be so excited.

‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie. 

‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,
‘ a shocked Tony read.

The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw
her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.

During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she
took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

NAIROBI, Dec 9 (Reuters) – Ghana’s dollar bonds rallied on Monday after the ruling party
candidate conceded Saturday’s presidential election to his opposition rival John Mahama.

The 2035 maturity led the gains, rising nearly
1 cent to bid at 74.31 cents on the dollar. Ghana’s cedi currency was
stable against the dollar.

Investors were betting that Mahama, who served as president from 2012-17, would not
abandon the current financing program with the International Monetary Fund despite
campaign promises to renegotiate its terms.

“Investors will now focus on what Mahama will do in office … Crucially, we would expect broad continuity of the IMF programme,” said Tellimer’s Stuart Culverhouse in a research note.

Mahama’s pledge echoed those of other reformist candidates
who have been elected into office in emerging markets this year, including Sri Lanka’s Anura Kumara Dissanayake,
who rode on a promise of reconsidering the terms
of an IMF programme and debt restructuring.

Ghana, a West African gold and cocoa producer, defaulted on most of
its external debt in 2022, leading to a painful restructuring.

The corresponding economic crisis fuelled voter anger
against the outgoing government as individuals and households reeled from soaring inflation and a fall in the cedi.

An IMF spokesperson said Ghana had made “remarkable progress” on its debt restructuring, and that any government, including Ghana’s, “may discuss changes with the IMF while ensuring that the economic objectives of the reform programs are still achievable”.

Mahama, who was leading with more than 50% of votes, according to early results from local media
and his party on Sunday, wants to introduce a public
debt ceiling to curb overborrowing, and to offer locals more ownership of upcoming oil and mining projects.

“The coming fortnight could be quite uncertain for financial markets,” said Barclays analyst Michael Kafe in a note to clients, citing potential revelations of a worse fiscal position than reported, especially the deficit.

The new government could bring forward its maiden budget from
March, he said, after the outgoing administration

failed to enact

a short-term spending plan to last through the transition, as is the norm.

latest flick.

The 38-year-old singer was recognized by her 49-year-old co-star – who revealed he ‘almost lost his mind’ due
to his diet – during a press conference for Joker:

The last time that actor Joaquin played The Joker, he had to drop over forty pounds (three and a
half stone). He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and apples which he said made him almost lose his mind.

Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning
role again in Joker: Folie a Deux – and says that he had to lose almost the same amount of weight once more,
and is never doing it again.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going
to talk through specifics of the diet, because I
just think nobody wants to hear that.

‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal that
we were doing, which I didn’t have last time. 

‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe.
But you’re right, I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This
is probably it for me.’

‘When Joaquin was too hungry we fed him blueberries.’

Phoenix said: ‘Part of the joy for me was to take standards and find a way that was specific to the characters. 

‘That was part of what was interesting for us. We started off with references like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr
and we started to emulate that sound.’

to express themselves because the dialogue is not

She had to forget her professional training: ‘It was about unlearning technique and forgetting how
to breathe.’

Director Todd Phillips said that he felt the pressure after the success of The Joker. 

He said: ‘I’m more nervous of this one than the first one.

The first one we were under the radar, this one everyone was writing on the internet about it.’

The Warner Bros film is released on October 4th.

After the release of the first film, Joaquin shut down rumours he only ate an apple
a day to achieve his astonishing weight loss, telling Access Hollywood that he consumed more food than that  ⁠— though
not much more.  

‘It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and
steamed green beans,’ he said of what he ate in preparation for the
role. 

The actor previously admitted that ‘you start to go mad when you lose that amount of
weight in that amount of time’

While speaking with Access Hollywood, Joaquin explained he consulted with a doctor
to ensure he lost weight as safely as possible

Although Joaquin has lost weight for roles before, he admitted that ‘Joker’ director Todd Phillips
didn’t make it easy on him. 

The Her star recalled how the producer always had the one food item he craved on hand, which made his diet a bit more of a
struggle. 

‘Todd did have these f*****g pretzels that I love. And he’d just have bags of them in his office!’ he said.
‘And that was difficult.’ 

Joaquin’s character is wearyingly thin in the
film, and he admitted that he had reservations about taking on such a drastic weight loss. 

‘It’s a horrible way to live,’ he told the New York Times.
‘I think [the Joker] should be kind of heavy. Todd was like, ‘I think
you should do the real thin person.”

Joaquin previously said his extreme diet helped him prepare for the role in more ways
than one. 

‘The first thing for us was the weight loss —
I think that’s really what I started with,’ he said
of working with the film’s director. 

‘And, as it turns out, that then affects your psychology.
You start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of time.’
